2025年蝉鸣盛夏，我们再次叩响上海纽约大学的校门，与诸位师友一同领略“放眼世界的博雅课堂”，探索和发现AI时代外语专业教育与研究的学术前沿；而今，又一个夏天如约而至，从虹口到浦东，从前滩到远方，我们诚挚地邀请您一同启程，共赴下一站的精彩！

一、课程描述

Grounded in the principles of Experiential Learning Theory, this three-day workshop guides college English instructors from essential theoretical perspectives to hands-on approaches for designing effective EAP courses in colleges and universities. Beginning with a review of key learner-based learning theories, attendees explore student-centered principles for integrated listening/speaking and reading/writing course design, with particular attention to active learning and communicative engagement. Attendees then consider how experiential learning can inform inquiry-driven EAP course design, especially the use of English as a medium for disciplinary exploration. Following a structured review and guided preparation, attendees collaborate in groups to present course design projects that demonstrate their reconceptualized student-centered pedagogy. Together, these sessions offer a coherent, practice‑oriented pathway for instructors seeking to integrate student‑centered and experiential learning frameworks into EAP curriculum development. Handouts are provided, and active participation is anticipated.

二、课程目标

1. Attendees will explore key learner‑based learning theories, including Experiential Learning Theory, to establish a theoretical foundation for student‑centered EAP course design.

2. Attendees will apply student‑centered principles to the design of integrated listening/speaking and reading/writing courses, with an emphasis on active learning and communicative engagement, as well as EAP courses in which English serves as a medium for disciplinary exploration.

3. Attendees will reflect on and refine their instructional practices to better integrate experiential and student‑centered learning frameworks into EAP curriculum development.

四、专家介绍

1. John Liang

Dr. John Liang is a Clinical Professor of TESOL and Director of the MA TESOL program at NYU Shanghai. He is deeply committed to advancing the theory and practice of language education and to preparing future teachers to become reflective, principled, and professionally engaged language educators. Prior to joining NYU Shanghai, Dr. Liang served for 26 years in the United States as an ESL program coordinator and second language teacher educator. He has received CATESOL’s Pearson Longman Spirit of Teaching Award, an award in recognition of excellence in English language teaching, and the Sadae Iwataki Award, a lifetime achievement honor for outstanding service to CATESOL.

An active practitioner‑researcher, Dr. Liang has published in journals such as INTESOL Journal and CATESOL Journal and contributed chapters to edited volumes published by Peter Lang, Routledge, and Cambridge Scholars. His academic and professional work spans grammar pedagogy, ESL materials development, second language reading and writing, and language assessment. Across these areas, he brings a sustained commitment to bridging research and practice and to supporting teachers’ lifelong professional growth.

 2. Zhang Meng

Dr. Zhang Meng is a Clinical Associate Professor of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) at NYU Shanghai, an Adjunct Professor of Education at Shanghai Jiaotong University, and Associate Editor of the International Journal of EAP. Dr. Zhang has extensive experience designing and teaching EAP and ESL courses in both China and the U.S., working with students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Her research interests include second language speaking and writing, academic socialization, and design-based research methodology. Her work has been published in prestigious journals such as TESOL Quarterly and the International Journal of Educational Research. Beyond academia, Dr. Zhang is a public speaker and creative writer. She has delivered talks at TEDx 2022 and various library events in Shanghai. Her books, I Confess (poetry and prose) and Rains in the Sixteen (poetry and prose), were published by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles Publishing House in 2023 and 2007, respectively.

2. About NYU Steinhardt Joint MA TESOL Program

上海纽约大学的英语教育硕士项目(MA TESOL)由上海纽约大学与全美教育学院排名前十的纽约大学斯坦哈特文化教育和人类发展学院合作开设，为在职英语教师及专业人士提供与斯坦哈特学院常规英语教育硕士项目不同的培养模式，全英文授课，为时两年。秋季和春季学期期间，学员以非全日制方式在上海纽约大学校园及线上平台进行学习，第二学年暑期则于纽约进行沉浸式课程学习。该硕士项目立足于现今国外前沿的教学方法，结合当前中国英语教学的需求，注重培养学员们的英语教学与研究技能，提高他们课堂内外的组织管理能力。该项目师资力量强大，由纽约大学斯坦哈特学院及上海纽约大学教授授课，他们精于第二语言的教学与研究，深谙中国学生的学习特点，因人施教。学员毕业后，将获得由中国教育部认可的纽约大学硕士学位。
