Consecutive severe heatwaves are expected to be forecasted in the following days, with temperatures soaring to and hovering around 40°C.

预计未来几天，魔都每天都会发布高温预警，最高气温均直逼40摄氏度。

 

The city has been on an orange alert — the second in the three-tier alert system — for heatwaves for six consecutive days since Wednesday. The mercury climbed to 39.7°C last Friday, July 14th, being the hottest day of the year so far.

自从上周三起，上海已经连续发布了六天的高温橙色预警，仅次于最高级红色。上周五气温攀升至39.7摄氏度，这是今年以来最热的一天。

This week, a subtropical anticyclone will remain and the city is forecasted to be clear to partly cloudy with scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon. Even it does rain, but the heat will not relieve. In the second half of the week, temperatures may reach around 39°C again, according to Shanghai Meteorological Center.

而在本周，副热带高压仍然将徘徊在申城上空，晴到多云、午后有分散性雷阵雨的天气仍然是每天的常态。但即使有降水，也不能有效缓解高温。据上海气象中心的消息，在本周的后半段，气温将再次触及39度线。

 

To make things worse, the ozone air pollution will come along with the heat. According to the Environmental Protection Department, the scorching sunshine accelerates the transforming process of oxide to ozone.

雪上加霜的是，臭氧污染也会随着高温而来。环保部门说，炽烈的阳光会加速氧气向臭氧转化的过程。

Hospitals have been receiving cases of heat stroke as outdoor workers couldn't protect themselves effectively from the severe heat wave. Other than that, the number of dog attacks due to the high temperature have also been reported. From April to June, Shanghai Punan Hospital received 6,620 patients attacked by dogs, which is 39.2 percent more than the first three months and 11.7 percent more than the same period last year. Most of the patients are dog owners. They turned off air conditioners when they left home, leaving their dogs fretful in sweltering indoor and becoming aggressive, even to their masters.

由于户外工作者不能得到有效的防暑保护，各大医院也开始陆续收到中暑患者。此外，因高温导致的犬伤病例也不断增加。今年4月到6月间，上海浦南医院已经收到了6,620起犬伤病例，相比第一季度增加了39.2%，比去年同期增加了11.7%。大多数犬伤患者都是狗主人，他们在离家之前会关闭空调，犬只在闷热的环境下变得极具攻击性，连自己的主人都会扑咬。

 

Shanghai's Civil Affairs Bureau has ordered neighborhood committees across the city to visit senior residents, especially those living alone or suffering from dementia.

上海的民政部门已经要求全市街道居委做好老年居民的慰问工作，在酷暑盛夏保障好独居老人和痴呆老人的生活起居。

 

Senior homes, day-care centers and meal-supply centers for the seniors must take precautions over fire safety, food safety and hygiene, along with the check of power supply, water pipes, air conditioning and fans to ensure they are working efficiently, said the Bureau.

全市养老院、日托中心、老年人供餐单位也被要求做好消防安全、食品安全、卫生保洁等预案，检查供电系统、水管、空调风扇等工作是否正常、有效。

Poles of Cold indicate the coldest places in the northern and southern hemisphere respectively. The "poles" come from their proximity to the North and South Poles.

“冷极”是指北半球和南半球最冷的地方，因邻近南北极而得“极”之名。

 

In the southern hemisphere, the Pole of Cold is currently located in Antarctica, the Russian Antarctic station Vostok at 78°28′S 106°48′E. On July 21, 1983, this station recorded a temperature of -89.2°C which is the lowest naturally occurring temperature ever recorded on Earth.

在南半球，冷极位于南极洲上的俄罗斯东方站（南纬78度28分，东经106度48分）。1983年7月21日，俄罗斯东方站测得了零下89.2度的极端低温。这是在地球上测得的最低自然气温。

 

In the northern hemisphere, there are two places in the Republic of Sakha, Siberia, Russia that vie for the honor of being considered the "Pole of Cold" in winter. They are Verkhoyansk and Oymyakon. In 1924, Russian scientist Sergey Obruchev registered the lowest temperature -71.2°C. On February 6, 1933, a temperature of -67.7°C was recorded at Oymyakon's weather station. This is the coldest reliably measured temperature for the Northern Hemisphere.
