BBC news with Stewart Macintosh.

The number of confirmed deaths from coronavirus around the world has now passed 100,000. Italy has suffered the most deaths, followed by the United States. Lockdowns imposed to limit the spread of the virus has crippled economic activity, and many governments are facing a dilemma on when to start easing restrictions. President Trump said it was the biggest decision he'd ever have to make.

The U.S surgeon general has urged people of color to avoid alcohol, tobacco and drugs to reduce their risks of contracting Covid-19. Doctor Jerome Adams said the virus was disproportionally affecting black and other minority communities, partly because they have more chronic health conditions.

The Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has extended the country's coronavirus lockdown, but some businesses will be allowed to re-open next week. But Mr. Conte said the gains Italy has made since its pioneer lockdowns must not be lost. Restrictions will stay in place until at least the 3rd of May.

Apple and Google are joining in developing technology to alert people if they recently come into contact with others found to be infected with coronavirus. It will work by using a phone's Bluetooth signals to determine if the owner has recently been in proximity to someone, who later tested positive for Covid-19.

Brazil has become the first country in the southern hemisphere, where more than 1000 people have died of Covid-19. Most Brazilian state governors have imposed quarantine measures, but president Jair Bolsonaro continues to challenge the restrictions, urging people to return to work.

A high-security prison in Russia's Siberia region has been set on fire by inmates after a riot. The authorities say a guard was attacked at Colony 15 prison in the Irkutsk region, and some inmates harmed themselves with broken glass.
