New measures to revive Tourism in Thailand

刘立军 供稿

TRANSCRIPT

Thailand is dropping almost all quarantine requirements for foreign visitors from more than 60 countries as it tries to revive its vital tourism industry. A mandatory 2-week quarantine period was imposed on all passengers arriving in the country 18 months ago to try to prevent the spread of Covid. Jonathan Head reports from Bangkok.

From this month, visitors from 63 countries who are fully vaccinated will be able to travel freely in Thailand after just a single night of quarantine when they'll be tested for the coronavirus. This still requires some preliminary paperwork. Thailand was slow to start vaccinating its population. Just 40% are fully inoculated, though the ratio is much higher in the main tourist areas. Almost 40 million foreign visitors came here in 2019. This year, the number is just 73,000.
