在武侠小说中，当双方战局焦灼，不分胜负，这时主角就会亮出绝招，一招定胜负。如果说哈利·波特有什么绝招的话，“除你武器”Expelliarmus（disarming charm缴械咒）当仁不让。

在第七部《哈里·波特与死亡圣器》中，哈利·波特正是因为使用了“除你武器”才被追赶他的食死徒认出来：

“Of course not,” said Lupin, “but the Death Eaters – frankly, most people! – would have expected you to attack back! Expelliarmus is a useful spell, Harry, but the Death Eaters seem to think it is your signature move, and I urge you not to let it become so!  

“当然不是，”卢平说，“但是食死徒——坦白讲，大多数人——希望你攻击回去！“除你武器”是个有用的咒语，哈利，但是食死徒似乎认为它是你的标志性动作，我强烈要求你不要让事情变成那样！”

哈利·波特第一次学习这个咒语是在二年级的时候，在《哈利·波特与密室》中，魔药课教授西弗勒斯·斯内普和黑魔法防御课老师洛哈特对决，斯内普用此咒除掉洛哈特的魔杖。

在第三部《哈利·波特与火焰杯》中，哈利·波特用此咒和伏地魔正面对决，发现了自己和伏地魔的魔杖是同源杖芯，并逼迫伏地魔的魔杖发出闪回咒，最终救了哈利。

Before Voldemort could stick his snakelike face around the headstone, Harry stood up ... he gripped his wand tightly in his hand, thrust it out in front of him, and threw himself around the headstone, facing Voldemort. 是expel和arm。

而Expelliarmus的主要构成部分：Expelli和armus其实就是它们的拉丁语形式。Expel的意思是“to force sth. out”；arm在这里可不是说胳膊，而是指weapon，合在一起则代指“to take the weapon away”。

在现代英语中，expel这个词也很常用，根据其本义“to force sth. out”引申出了很多意思，应用在不同场景中。

1. v. to officially make sb. leave a school or an organization 把……开除，除名

例句：

She was expelled from school at 15. 

她15岁时被学校开除了。

2. v. to force sb. to leave a country 驱逐出境

例句：

Foreign journalists are being expelled. 

外国记者被驱逐出境。
