Coronavirus: Psychological support amid outbreak

In China the emergence of novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) has not only threatened people’s physical health, but triggered mental health concerns as well. People may feel frustration, anxiety and fear confronting the coronavirus outbreak.

The epidemic trauma is especially unbearable for the patients. Besides anxiety over their health status, patients usually experience a strong sense of guilt, blaming themselves for infection of others. Aware of the psychological problems, hospital staff often offer words of comfort and arrange psychological counseling workshops. There are meanwhile dancing and other delightful activities in the hospital to appease the loneliness of patients.

Frontline medical staff should also have access to professional mental health services. Though they can spare no time to be afraid during the intensive work, exhaustion, depression and helplessness still haunt them after work. What’s worse, some agitated patients or their families have been taking out their frustration on these health care providers.

Zhang Hong, deputy chief physician of Wuhan Mental Health Center, believes that without psychological intervention, some doctors and nurses may suffer from long-term severe psychological disorders. To protect medical workers, a circular was released that orders them to take mandatory rest after long working hours and receive timely mental health consultation.

As for the public, this health crisis has caused some social disturbances. Due to the overconsumption of media and the overemphasis of some media on the problem, the public is prone to negative emotions and even extreme behavior. To preserve the public mental health, 24-hour hotlines have been opened and psychological aid teams have been established on line, with psychologists and psychiatrists promoting mental health knowledge and maintaining social stability. In addition, people themselves should avoid frequently and repeatedly checking the updates and pay attention to the reliability of information.
