The downtown district has a total of 637 telephone booths that were built across the city before the mobile phone era made them largely redundant. Many of the telephones still require an IC card that has almost disappeared in Shanghai.

徐汇区共建有637座公共电话亭，在手机时代到来后，它们逐渐被人遗忘而变成了摆设。其中有很多公共电话需要IC电话卡计费，而这种电话卡在上海几乎绝迹。

Residents are complaining there are too many telephone booths but seldom used. Many of them are in poor condition due to lack of maintenance. The iconic red booths will be renovated, with their appearance being kept to retain the flavor of the old Shanghai streets. 

居民抱怨城市内的被闲置的电话亭数量过多，还有许多电话亭因为缺乏维护而破败不堪。但不久之后，这些标志性的红色电话亭将会迎来全面改造，但它们的外观不会被过多改动，而是保持旧上海街道的风格。

第一座阅读亭将“落户”复兴路

The first batch of 12 revamped booths will open to public by the end of the year in a trial operation to solicit ideas. While the telephones will be kept inside the booths for people to make emergency calls free of charge.

第一批经过改造的12座电话亭将在本年底开始试运行，并向公众收集意见。然而这些电话亭里的公共电话仍将被保留，以供人们免费拨打应急电话。

悦读亭设计图揭晓

The cultural bureau that takes charge of the renovation project has several ideas for the revamped kiosks. Some of them will be turned into the “library booths,” where 60 or so books will be available for people to borrow. Under the plan, two telephone booths adjacent will be combined with a cylinder cabin placed between them to store the books which are available to the readers on both side, according to the bureau.

负责该项电话亭改造项目的文化主管部门已有多种改造方案。一部分电话亭将会被改造为“悦读亭”，内部将会放置大约60本图书供读者借阅。主管部门表示，在这种方案中，两座相连的电话亭中间将会放置一个圆筒形书架，这样两侧的读者就可以共享借阅书架上的图书。

Other booths will become “celebrity exhibition halls” with photos and introductions about famous writers and artists who once lived in Xuhui. Notices in these booths will recommend visitors to see nearby former residences of celebrities such as the writer Ba Jin.

一部分电话亭将会被改造为“名人展厅”，展示曾经在徐汇区生活居住过的著名作家和艺术家的照片与简介。这些亭子内将会为游客推荐参观附近的名人故居，例如巴金故居等。

“Electronic booths” will allow users to listen to audio materials or to record their own voices. The local dialect could be heard in these electronic booths, as part of an effort to promote the distinctive language and culture of the city.

而在“电子亭”内读者可以播放有声书或可以录下自己的声音。在这些“电子亭”内，读者还能听到用本地方言朗诵的有声书，凸显城市对本土语言与文化的传承与保护。

Xuhui District is a district of Shanghai. It has a land area of 54.76 km2. Located at the southwest section of downtown Shanghai, Xuhui District is significant in its history, culture, and economy.

The Xuhui District is centered on Xujiahui, after which it is named. Xujiahui was historically land owned by Ming dynasty bureaucrat and scientist Xu Guangqi, and later donated to the Roman Catholic Church. Being the core of Catholic Shanghai, the Xuhui District formed, together with neighboring former Luwan District, the former French Concession of Shanghai. Vestiges of the French influence can still be seen in the St. Ignatius Cathedral of Shanghai, Xuhui College, the Xujiahui Observatory, and some remaining boulevards and French-style districts.

Xujiahui itself has been redeveloped as a commercial centre, with a proliferation of large-scale shopping centers and department stores. Now it is a major shopping destination in the city, with shopping malls such as Grand Gateway Shanghai and Pacific Sogo.

The educational tradition begun by Jesuits in Xuhui continues with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the premier university in China. The district also has some of the best secondary schools in the municipality, such as South West Weiyu Middle School, Shanghai High School and Nanyang Model High School.

徐汇区从教会学校发端的教育传统，由我国著名高等学府——上海交通大学延续并继承。区内还有多所重点高中，例如西南位育中学、上海中学、南洋模范中学等。

A number of former residences of prominent personalities remain, including Soong Ching-ling and Sun Yat-sen's former residence. Yao Ming of Houston Rockets also grew up as a resident of the district.

这里还有众多的名人故居，包括宋庆龄和孙中山的旧居。昔日“休斯敦火箭队”的姚明，也在这里生活长大。
