Part I. Passage

Embracing Multiculturalism Through Caribbean Music

Students experienced Caribbean culture during an event at China Agricultural University (CAU), marking the end of the academic year. The reggae band One Drop performed Bob Marleys iconic One Love, creating a moment of unity and connection. Liu Siyan, a student, reflected on how singing together highlighted the shared human experience that multicultural education fosters.

As an assistant teaching professor at CAU, part of a dual degree program with the University of Colorado Denver, I teach a communication and diversity course. This course explores cultural differences and encourages unity through shared experiences. My own perspective, shaped by my Jamaican-Chinese heritage, informs my approach to teaching.

One of the courses I offer focuses on Caribbean music, including reggae and dancehall. Students learn about the cultural fusion that gave rise to the genre and figures like Bob Marley, whose music symbolizes resilience and hope. Reggaes recognition as part of UNESCOs intangible cultural heritage underscores its global significance.

The course also delves into the historical impacts of colonialism on Caribbean nations and examines issues such as race, ethnicity, nationality, and gender. By exploring these topics, students gain cross-cultural awareness and understand their role in building a shared future.

In June, we welcomed Liu Rui, a Chinese reggae artist known as Stinging Ray, as a guest lecturer. Liu blends Chinese lyrics with reggaes rhythms, sharing his unique perspective and contributing to the genres global evolution.

Chinas commitment to multiculturalism and international exchanges has provided opportunities for educators like me. I aim to pass these opportunities on to my students, fostering greater understanding and collaboration in a diverse world.
