Henry Kissinger, Statesman and Scholar

TRANSCRIPT
Narrator: Henry Kissinger — the only person to be White House National Security Advisor and Secretary of State at the same time — has died. Kissinger wielded unparalleled power over US foreign policy throughout the Nixon and Ford administrations.
wield v. 行使(权力),运用(影响力)
Richard Nixon: Here is a man who has the poise, the strength, the character to serve in this great position.
poise n. 镇定,沉着
Henry Kissinger: We will strive not just for a pragmatic solution to this or that difficulty, but to recognize that America has never been true to itself unless it meant something beyond itself.
pragmatic adj.务实的,实际的
Narrator: And for decades after, he was a consultant and writer who offered opinions that shaped global politics and business.
Henry Kissinger: Donald Trump is a phenomenon that foreign countries haven’t seen. And I believe he has the possibility of going down in history as a very considerable president.
Narrator: As a Jewish immigrant fleeing Nazi Germany, Kissinger spoke little English when he arrived in the United States as a teenager in 1938.
Henry Kissinger: I was kind of a refugee who had to earn a living. The idea of representing the United States as a foreign-born, uh, who had to get adjusted to a new country (In fact, that’s true), didn’t occur to me.
refugee n. 难民
Narrator: As his political star skyrocketed, he wasn’t afraid of publicity, becoming a star of the tabloids as well as the publications that sought his ideas on geopolitics. He was known to date Hollywood actresses before marrying his second wife, Nancy, a foreign policy researcher, in 1974. Although a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, he was a controversial figure, in part because of policies in Cambodia, Chile, and South Asia. Critics blamed him for the 1969 secret bombing of neutral Cambodia, and at least indirectly responsible for the CIA-inspired coup that overthrew the legally elected Socialist government in Chile in 1973 — which Kissinger denied. They accused him of manipulating the 1974 coup that overthrew the government of Cyprus, and of supporting Pakistan’s brutal campaign to quash a rebellion in what is now Bangladesh, because Pakistan was his secret conduit to the Chinese. Considered one of Kissinger’s most successful achievements was the secret diplomacy that led to Richard Nixon’s visit to China in February 1972 — an event that reshaped the global balance of power.
coup n. 政变
conduit n. 中转人;中转机构;中转国
