TRANSCRIPT

Reports from Tunisia say police have arrested the top two officials in the main opposition party. They include the interim head of Ennahda Mondher Ounissi. His detention is said to be linked to audio messages in which he purportedly accuses party colleagues of receiving illegal funds. Mr. Ounissi says the recordings are fabricated. The Tunisian authorities have detained a series of opposition figures this year.

Gabon’s new military leader has held talks with the opposition candidate Albert Ondo Ossa who claimed victory in last week’s presidential election. The opposition leader had boycotted general Brice Oligui Nguema’s inauguration on Monday. Thomas Nadia is in Libreville. The meeting between the two could mean that the opposition may have a role to play in the interim government. Last Wednesday, school seems to be enjoying some popular support, but many are uncertain about the future. General Nguema has not said when he plans to return the country to civilian rule.

The army in Burkina Faso says more than 50 members of the security forces have been killed in clashes with Islamic militants. The fighting took place near the border with Mali where the military has been trying to regain grounds to allow villagers to return home. More than 2 million people have been displaced in recent years.

A judge in New York has cleared a man who was wrongly convicted of rape nearly half a century ago. The overturning of the case against Leonard Mack, who is African American is believed to be the longest standing conviction to be quashed as a result of DNA evidence. He spent more than 7 years in jail. The judge said it had been the honor of her career to clear his name. As he left the courtroom, Mr. Mack shouted “free at last”.
