TRANSCRIPT
The former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan has been disqualified from politics for 5 years 3 days after receiving a prison sentence for corruption. The ruling from the election commission means he’ll be dismissed as an MP and forbidden to stand for public office. It’s unclear if the start date for his disqualification starts now or when he’s freed. Imran Khan denies any wrongdoing.
Five officers belonging to an elite French police unit were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the death of a man during the July anti-police riots. Mohamed Bendriss died after reportedly feeling unwell in Marseille. Prosecutors now say they consider it “probable” that his death was caused by a police projectile after a post mortem showed marks on his chest.
The South African government says violence connected with a strike by taxi drivers in Cape Town has killed five people since Thursday. Police minister Bheki Cele had said the five people who were murdered included a British national and a police officer who were caught up in violent protests. The taxi strike is expected to continue after negotiations broke down between the South African National Taxi Council and the provincial government led by the democratic alliance. Meanwhile, transport minister Sindisiwe Chikunga ordered the immediate release of impounded minibus taxis by the city of Cape Town. She said the legislation used by the city had been executed and implemented illegally.
