Former First Lady Michelle Obama pronounced Donald Trump unfit for the US presidency in an impassioned speech at the Democratic National Convention on Monday night as the party attempted to present a broad base of support for Joe Biden’s candidacy.

Mrs Obama accused Mr Trump of a “total lack of empathy” and said his administration had spread “chaos and division” at a time when Americans were looking for “leadership and consolation” during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Donald Trump is the wrong president for our country,” Mrs Obama said in a pre-recorded speech. “He has had more than enough time to prove that he can do the job, but he is clearly in over his head. He cannot meet this moment. He simply cannot be who we need him to be for us. It is what it is.”

Mrs Obama was repeating the same form of words — “it is what it is” — that Mr Trump recently used when asked about the coronavirus death toll in the US, which stands at more than 170,000.

“If you think things cannot possibly get worse, trust me, they can, and they will, if we don’t make a change in this election,” she said. “If we want to be able to look our children in the eye after this election, we have got to reassert our place in American history.”

Mrs Obama’s remarks followed a speech from the leftwing senator Bernie Sanders, who adopted an unusually conciliatory tone as he urged millions of his progressive supporters to back the more moderate Mr Biden rather than risk a second term for Mr Trump.

Four prominent Republicans — including John Kasich, the 2016 Republican presidential candidate and former governor of Ohio — also joined the virtual stage as the party attempted to project the depth of opposition to Mr Trump from across the political spectrum.

Mr Kasich said: “I’m a life-long Republican, but that attachment holds second place to my responsibility to my country. That’s why I’ve chosen to appear at this convention.”
