Argentina Returned Home After Beating France in World Cup

TRANSCRIPT

Jordan is hosting a Middle East summit today to try to help solve the multiple crises in the region. The gathering on the shores of the Dead Sea will bring together leaders from Jordan, Iran, Iraq, and delegations from Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

Police in Indian-administered Kashmir say three militants have been killed in an exchange of fire with security forces. They said the three were members of the Islamist group Lashkar-e-Taiba and the two of them were wanted for recent killings of civilians. The Indian authorities say they recovered two pistols and a rifle after the gun battle. Their account of the incident in the Shopian area can’t be independently confirmed.

Researchers examining woodlands in Britain have demonstrated that they capture almost twice as much carbon as previously estimated. The team made the discovery using laser scanners to scan almost 1,000 trees in a forest in Oxfordshire. They formed extremely accurate, three-dimensional computer models, discovering that the weight of each tree and of an average patch of woodland has been significantly underestimated because trees pull carbon dioxide from the air as they grow. The researchers say it shows mature woodland could be even more important in fighting climate change than previously thought.

Argentina’s national football team have returned home two days after beating France to win the World Cup in a final widely described as the greatest ever. First off the plane at the Ezeiza international airport was the team captain and their football legend Lionel Messi clutching the solid gold trophy. Huge crowds lined the road as they took an open top bus to a nearby training complex. There they’ll spend the night before touring Buenos Aires city center on Tuesday where millions are expected in the streets to greet them on what’s been declared a public holiday.
