Australia Overturned A Ban on Djokovic

TRANSCRIPT

An alliance of more than 30 media organizations from around the world have published a joint editorial calling for a windfall tax on the biggest fossil fuel companies. It suggests the funds raised by the tax be used to help vulnerable countries cope with the worst impacts of climate change.

The family of the Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh say they're encouraged by reports that the FBI has opened an investigation into her killing. The Al Jazeera correspondent was shot in the head during an Israeli raid in the occupied West Bank in May. Tom Bateman is in Jerusalem.

An independent criminal investigation by the US into Shireen Abu Akleh's killing has been a central demand of her family. Responding to reports, the FBI has opened an inquiry. They said they were encouraged that the Americans were doing what they should when a citizen was killed by a foreign military and called for the inquiry to follow the evidence up and down the chain of command.

Israel's outgoing defense minister Benny Gantz described the US decision as a serious mistake, adding that Israel would not cooperate and wouldn't allow interference into its internal affairs in a case likely to create further tension between Israel's incoming government and a Biden administration.

The former head of football's world governing body Sepp Blatter has said that Qatar's human rights record was not discussed during the World Cup bidding process. There has been international concern about Qatar's treatment of migrant workers and gay people.

Novak Djokovic will be able to play in January's Australian Open after the immigration minister overturned a ban on the tennis star's entry because of his unvaccinated status. Australian media are reporting he's now been granted a visa. In January, the Serb was deported from Australia before this year's Grand Slam Tournament. And the former world number one was originally barred from the country until 2025.
