Summer Days in the Mountains

Yu Xuanji

Ever since I move here

to live the way immortals do,

clusters of flowers abound all around,

so planting is something I’ve never done.

The bushes in the yard

make hangers for my clothes;

the fresh spring by my sitting place

is a flowing cup of wine.

The balustrade fades into a path

through the deep bamboo;

my silken dress is surrounded

by books in disarray.

Leisurely boarding a pleasure boat,

I sing poems to the moon,

Trusting in the gentle breeze

to blow me back to home.

(Bannie Chow, Thomas Cleary 译)

Living in the Summer Mountains

Yü Hsüan-chi

I have moved to this home of Immortals.

Wild shrubs bloom everywhere.

In the front garden, trees

Spread their branches for clothes racks.

I sit on a mat and float wine cups

In the cool spring.

Beyond the window railing

A hidden path leads away

Into the dense bamboo grove.

In a gauze dress

I read among my disordered

Piles of books.

I take a leisurely ride

In the painted boat,

And chant poems to the moon.

I drift at ease, for I know

The soft wind will blow me home.

(Kenneth Rexroth and Ling Chung 译)

Living in the Mountains in Summer

Yu Xuanji

I’ve moved and now I live up here

where gods could make their homes

the shrubs and thickets mix and bloom –

nobody had to plant them

the little tree in the courtyard

is where I hang my laundry

all the wine I can drink

from this mountain spring I sit by

my winds and my hallways

go deep through the bamboo trail

I use my silky clothes

to wrap up heaps of scattered books

rowing out idly in my decorated boat

chanting poems to the radiant moon

and the light breeze blows and blows –

I can trust it to bring me back.

(David Young and Jiann I. Lin 译)

summer in the mountains

Yu Xuanji

living in this place of celestials

you don’t need to bother to plant

flowers just grow

I hang my washing on the tree in the courtyard

I sit by the river, let the cup float along

outside the window a deep bamboo path

books wrapped in damask

sail a pleasure-boat in my free time

recite a poem for the bright moon

a breeze will blow me home
