英国欲立法对抗欧洲人权法院

刘立军 供稿

TRANSCRIPT

The British government is to present proposals to parliament today that would override the power of the European court of human rights. The bill of rights enables the government to ignore injunctions from the court in Strasbourg in France, such as its decision to block Britain’s plans to send asylum seekers to Rwanda. Dominic Casciani reports.

Most of this package was first entailed last December, including plans to restrict foreign offenders using family life under the Human Rights Act to avoid deportation. There are also new rules for judges telling them to put British laws before judgments from the European court of human rights if the two are in dispute, although they can in theory do that already. Critics say the proposals will make it harder for people to take human rights claims to courts in the UK, placing too much power in the hands of ministers.
