【TRANSCRIPT】

This is AP News Minute.

In a stinging rebuke to President Donald Trump, the Congress has overridden his veto of a defense policy bill, a first by lawmakers since Trump took office. In a New Year's Day session, the Republican-controlled Senate dismissed Trump's objections to the $740 billion bill.

The Justice Department has asked a federal judge to dismiss a last-gasp lawsuit led by a House Republican. The lawsuit seeks to give Vice President Mike Pence the power to overturn the results of the presidential election when Congress formally counts the Electoral College votes next week.

Medical workers in Britain are warning that hospitals around the country face a dangerous situation in January amid surging coronavirus infections blamed on a new virus variant. Authorities pressed to reactivate field hospitals as concerns are increasing about the ability of the already stretched National Health Service to cope with the anticipated increase.

The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington held New Year's mass Friday morning. Archbishop Wilton Cardinal Gregory presided over the traditional ceremony. The number of attendees was smaller this year due to the ongoing pandemic.
